Healing Quilts, Inc. is an organization that makes art therapy quilts for children who have experienced illness or loss. The quilts are offered to professionals who have expertise in helping children work through difficult times. As part of the healing process, children express their thoughts and feelings on the patchwork sides of the quilts, using a variety of arts and crafts materials. Since September, 2002, approximately three hundred quilts have been distributed to families affected by the events of 9/11 and the snipers' attacks, pediatric medical centers and hospice programs. Recently children in the Gulf Coast have received quilts under the guidance of mental health care professionals and organizations such as the Christian Children's Fund. The success of Healing Quilts, Inc. is based completely on volunteer support. The volunteers share a deep respect for the thoughts and feelings of children, and an understanding of the value of art therapy in the healing process.
